UK weather: Spring cold snap brings flurries of snow and plummeting temperatures

The UK is set for wintry weather heading into the weekend as temperatures plummet and cold showers bring flurries of snow amid a spring cold snap.

Recent sunshine and warmer temperatures have been replaced by a cold Arctic maritime airmass pushing southwards, bringing unsettled conditions and morning frosts.

Overnight, temperatures dropped to as low as -8C at Tulloch Bridge in the Scottish Highlands.

Snow even fell in the capital on Friday morning, with surprised Londoners taking to social media as they got caught in the flurries.

The Met office has issued a Yellow weather warning for the far south-east of England, as well as for Hull and Newcastle upon Tyne on Saturday, as snow and hail showers could lead to icy surfaces and possible travel disruption.

In London and the South East, the weather on Friday was windy with sunny spells and wintry showers, with more expected throughout the day.

These will be most frequent in the far South East, including Kent and East Sussex, with hill snow and hail in parts.

Temperatures are expected to reach just 2C in London and Edinburgh on Friday night.

Saturday will see a frosty start followed by another day of sunshine and scattered showers, with a maximum temperature of 10C. The wintry weather will be particularly centered around the high ground of Wales and the South West.

Steve Ramsdale, the Met Office chief meteorologist, said: "As cold air continues to be drawn down from the North there is the potential for wintry showers to affect almost any area of the UK.

"Although there's unlikely to be widespread accumulations of snow there is a risk of some disruption in eastern and southeastern areas.

"The best of any clear and sunny spells through the rest of this week are likely to be in the south and west of the UK, but it will definitely feel colder than it has over the last week or so."
