UK weather: Rain showers to lash Brits before balmy 20C Easter weekend sunshine

Britain will have to endure more April showers before a warmer Easter weekend where temperatures are expected to surpass 20C.

Forecaster Ventusky predicts an out-of-season warm blast to end the week and start the next, with parts of London expected to see highs of 21C on Easter Saturday and Sunday.

Chelsea, Brixton and Morden in the west of the city are among the areas earmarked for the best temperatures as the UK looks to break out of the cold rut.

The charts show things slowly heating up in the coming days, with the mercury in the mid-teens on Maundy Thursday, then reaching 20C on Good Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said "Low pressure is in charge, giving us outbreaks of rain across the country but through Good Friday into Easter Sunday it should stay largely settled."

Temperatures are set to reach double figures across mainland Britain, with only the Scottish Highlands dipping below but most of the country should be between 12C and 14C. It could reach up to 16C in the far southeast at its peak.

Mr Dewhurst added: "By the end of the Wednesday night, the rain is becoming a bit more confined to the far east. A frost-free start to Thursday morning but largely cloudy skies, some blue skies across Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland but elsewhere generally cloudy.

"Throughout the day, the increasing risk of some heavy showers across parts of Wales and into the middles and central southern England. Some rumbles of thunder too.

"Elsewhere some sunny spells but the risk of a few showers, always cloudier and outbreaks of rain across some eastern of parts of Scotland and in England as well. The dry weather into the afternoon will be parts of Northern Ireland western Scotland."

The damp weather will continue to affect eastern England with sustained rain from the evening and into the early hours of Good Friday, where the clear skies could bring frost in some areas.

Mr Dewhurst added: "Into the evening, the risk of showers merging to give some longer spells of rain down the eastern side of England. But in the early hours of Good Friday, skies will clear and that will allow temperatures to drop with light winds.

"We will see the return of frost across parts of Northern Ireland into Scotland in particular."

Saturday and Sunday are then forecasted to see the peak temperatures before trailing off on Easter Monday but will jump up again on Tuesday to 19C.
