UK weather: New snow and ice warnings issued as Brits warned of trip and fall hazards

The Met Office has issued a number of new weather warnings for snow, ice, rain and wind across the UK.

Brits have been warned of the risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces, as the white stuff is expected to blanket parts of the country overnight.

A yellow warning for ice across parts of Scotland and northern England is in force from 10pm tonight until 10am tomorrow.

Forecasters said icy stretches are likely, with snow set to cover hills across the region.

The Met Office said: "Frequent showers, falling as snow above around 400 metres with accumulations of 5-10 cm across the Southern Uplands, will gradually ease overnight with clear spells developing across northern Scotland initially, extending further south towards the end of Saturday night.

"This will allow wet surfaces to fall below freezing leading to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces."

Another warning for rain and wind has been issued for southwestern Scotland and the far north of Northern Ireland.

It is in force from 2pm today until 1am on Sunday, with residents being warned that strong winds and heavy rain may cause disruption to travel.

Forecasters explained: "Westerly winds will increase across western Scotland and northern parts of Northern Ireland later this afternoon and evening with gusts of 45-55 mph inland and 60-70 mph around the coast, easing later this evening.

"A band of persistent and occasionally heavy rain will extend south across warning area during this period, and combined with saturated ground may lead to some flooding."

The Met Office also issued a yellow warning for rain covering parts of northwestern England, Wales and southwestern England. It is in force until noon today.

Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely and public transport journeys may take longer than usual, Brits have been told.

More yellow weather warnings are in force over the next few days, the Met Office said.

A warning for snow and ice has been issued for northern Scotland and is valid from 5pm on Sunday until 10am on Wednesday.

The Met Office explained frequent wintry showers will hit Scotland with a few centimetres of snow likely at low levels.

Above 200 metres, there might be between 10cm and 15cm of snow, especially across parts of the Highlands.

Forecasters warned ice will be an additional hazard, especially on Tuesday night.
