UK mini-heatwave to come to crashing end - but more sizzling hot weather on way

Brits are being warned of cooler temperatures and showers making an abrupt return before the mercury rises and hot weather is back for next weekend.

It has been a warm couple of days for many parts of the country with people heading out and enjoying the sunshine but the temperature will be several degrees lower over the next couple of days.

For the start of the working week it is due to be very cold for May especially at night with the possibility of frost and freezing temperatures which has also led to a warning for gardeners.

Rain showers will be moving their way across the country and there could be mist and fog on Tuesday morning.

Then by midweek the mercury is likely to start to climb again.

By the weekend, we're due to get temperatures of 19C, before things heat up more at 20C from the following Monday.

BBC forecaster Stav Danaos said: “It is quite a quiet weather story indeed for the upcoming week and beyond because high pressure looks to be dominating the scene for quite a while.

"So it is going to be mostly dry, there will be a few showers, mostly across the north of the UK, it could be quite cool as well to start this new week, certainly Monday and Tuesday by day and by night but it will warm up slightly by the end of the week.

"Now the game changer has been this weather front, a cold front with some rain on it. That has been spreading southwards and eastwards across the country through today, it will be lying across the southeast by the end of tonight so a mildish night here but further northwest under clear skies quite a chilly one to come.

"We could even see a touch of frost, or temperatures down to freezing I should say in some of the sheltered glens across Scotland.”

Then on Monday it is likely to be sunshine and showers with temperatures low to mid teens which is “quite cool for this time of year” said Mr Danaos.

And on Tuesday there will be more showers especially for the north of the UK.

It then looks as though temperatures will start to climb from the middle of next week.

Mr Danaos said: "The outlook as we end the week, push into the new weekend and the following week, high pressure dominates the scene, keeps most of these weather systems at bay and will start to import some slightly warmer air on an easterly wind off the near continent.

"So you will see from the air mass chart really, towards the end of the week, the weekend, into the following week, we keep these blue colours, the colder weather away, maybe tap into something a little bit warmer from the near continent."

And Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst agreed: “It looks like high pressure will be close if not over the UK as we move through the week, we may see some weather fronts passing through at times increasing the risk of showers but there should be plenty of sunny spells.

"Quite a chilly start as well but it looks as though temperatures will rise as we head towards the middle of the week onwards and especially towards next weekend."
