UK weather: Met Office warns heavy rain, hail, thunderstorms and flooding to hit TODAY

Many Brits are waking up to another morning today as heavy rain is forecast for many parts of the UK.

The Met Office placed a yellow warning for rain in place from 4am to 10am in an area of Scotland stretching from Edinburgh up to Aberdeen.

It warned the heavy rainfall could bring a chance of some flooding and disruption, with those affected urged to take care when travelling.

Heavy rain with a chance of hail and thunder is also forecast for London and the east of England, moving northwards throughout the day.

From 3pm to 11.45pm, a separate yellow weather warning for rain will come into force across parts of Scotland.

The Met office says to expect travel disruption as spray and flooding on roads probably could make journey times longer by car and bus and that rail services could also be affected by flooding.

There is also a warning of homes and businesses being flooded.

The rainfall is likely to persist throughout the evening, before clearing up across most of the nation on Friday and into the weekend.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: “Things have changed since the start of the month, for starters rain has arrived in many parts of the UK but also we’ve seen hurricanes form in the Atlantic.

"It has been a remarkably quiet start to the Atlantic hurricane season but now it has turned busier.

"Hurricane Earl, Hurricane Danielle as well - don’t worry these aren’t going to hit the UK as fully formed hurricanes but they will have some influence on the UK’s weather over the next week or so.”

This week the country has already been impacted by an extra-tropical cycle, with low pressure, and that has been bringing the showers.

It is expected to be a washout for Thursday and also be very wet on Friday.

And there will be more rain heading for the country next week, said Mr McGivern.

"It does look like there will be some heavy rain as these fronts cross the country over next week because that rain is being fed by tropical moistures," he said.

"So there is a lot of warmth and humidity tied up in this system wrapped around Danielle and that means especially over western hills there could be some very soggy weather for Sunday and into the start of next week and elsewhere as it crosses the country.

"Also a breezy start to the week, but that breeze coming up from the south, because it is coming up from hurricane, or ex-hurricane Danielle, it is bringing in that tropical warmth so actually for the start of next week it could look quite warm, especially in the east if we get some brighter spells."
