UK weather map shows 'proper snow' to hit Leeds as 'Beast from the East' still possible

Leeds could be covered in a blanket of snow next month as forecasters warn there was a chance of "severe cold weather".

A map by WX Charts shows Leeds could be hit by snow on March 11 alongside other Yorkshire towns and cities such as Wakefield, Bradford and Sheffield. On the map, snow is depicted in different shades of purple, depending on the amount of snowfall per hour.

The Met Office has also said that snow could be on the cards for the first half of March. While a winter storm like the 2018 "Beast from the East" was unlikely, forecasters said they are not ruling out the possibility.

The winter storm five years ago saw the nation hit by immense snowfall and cold temperatures. It is estimated the extreme weather event caused around £1.2 billion in damage.

Addressing concerns, a spokesperson for the Met Office said: "We're going with around a 25 per cent chance of severe cold weather coming to the UK as we go through the first half of March and that then brings the risk of some snow, which could be hazardous. But the most likely outcome is that it won't be anywhere near as severe as the Beast from the East, but it's not something we're ruling out. It is a possibility but it's one of many."

Their long range weather forecast for March 10 to 24 also predicts spells of rain or snow. It says: "In this period, spells of rain or snow are more likely than earlier in the month, with a low chance that some wintry episodes could be disruptive, though northwestern areas most likely to see the driest conditions.

"Winds could often be from a northerly or easterly direction, and temperatures are more likely to be below-average than above-average overall, but later in the month, colder air will be fighting against a strengthening sun."
