Brits are set for a wet and windy day with yellow warnings for heavy rain that will run through until Wednesday.
It will be another cold start to Tuesday after temperatures dropped as low as -4C in Scotland and were close to zero in much of the country overnight.
But the mercury will rise into double figures for most areas which in turn will lead to the melting of snow and ice that has built up under the recent cold snap.
The Met Office has yellow warnings for rain that will run from 2pm today until 6am on Wednesday and covers parts of central and southern Scotland as well as the far north west of England.
It states: “Occasionally heavy rain and a thaw of lying hill snow is expected to lead to localised flooding and transport disruption.”
It adds: “Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible. Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer. Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.”
And the milder conditions are expected to remain for the rest of week with maps from WXCharts suggesting that temperatures won’t fall again to 0C until the weekend.
BBC weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker: “Tuesday is going to be a wet and windy day right across the UK.
"We will have had some clear skies and even a touch of frost earlier on in the night across northern and eastern areas of the country but the rain bearing cloud, and this weather system, are racing in our direction.
"You can see that clear gap with the clearer skies early on. Really over the next 24 and 48 hours we will see very mild area spreading all the way from the Azores, from the subtropics in fact so temperatures could reach the mixed teens in the south of the country.”
It will also be blustery along the coasts on Tuesday evening with gusts up to 50mph while also during the day where the heaviest rain falls in Scotland there could be 50mm. In England the Environment Agency currently has seven flood warnings in place while in Scotland there are a further 13.
