UK weather forecast: Mid-week scorcher with temperatures higher than the Spanish Costas

Brits are set for more balmy weather ahead this week with temperatures hotter than the Spanish Costas - though they won’t reach the highs of the Easter weekend.

It was a blistering holiday weekend with temperatures the hottest of the year so far as they hit 23C with people lapping up the rays outdoors.

Since Saturday the mercury has gradually dipped and while it remained warm with temperatures of 17C on Easter Monday, it will be a cold start as people go back into work on Tuesday.

The mercury will be close to 0C in some areas this morning, and there will be frost for some. But it is not all doom and gloom as there will be plenty of sunshine later in the day on Tuesday and then temperatures will be in the high teens through midweek.

For the early hours of Tuesday morning it will be around 1C in central Scotland and around 2C or 3C in the south west of England while for the bulk of England it will be around 5C.

The warm weather is coming from a high pressure system over Scandinavia (WX Charts)

The temperature quickly climbs and up to around 15C in the south east of England, while typically around 13C or 14C.

Then with highs of 18C on Wednesday it is expected to be warmer than Barcelona and Valencia where an area of low pressure could see the mercury drop to 14C.

BBC weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "For those of you who have extended your Easter break into this week there is some good weather news in that there will be a lot of dry weather around. Admittedly there will be some showers, more especially in the next 24 hours and as the week goes on an increasing breeze will turn eastern areas that bit cooler."

His colleague Stav Danaos also pointed to the cold starts on Tuesday and Wednesday but looking at the weekly outlook he said that the high pressure over Scandinavia will keep it warm.

"A chilly start with a touch of frost in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland to begin the day," he said.

After a cold start it is expected to be warm on Wednesday (PA)

"We will have this old weather front across the north west of Scotland bringing further showers but otherwise quite a lot of sunshine. Sunny spells, variable clouds and showers for England and Wales, some of these showers can be quite heavy, slow moving as the winds are going to be light pretty much across the board. Lighter winds as well for the north west of Scotland."

Looking at Wednesday Mr Danaos expects the temperature to reach 18C.

He continued: "For Wednesday this area of high pressure is beginning to strengthen across Scandinavia keeping this low pressure system out at bay which will remain out in the Atlantic.

Temperatures have been gradually dipping since last Saturday (Liverpool Echo)

"So I think Northern Ireland, I think the rest of Britain as well will be dry through Wednesday, variable cloud, some sunshine at times, bit of a easterly breeze developing across the east of England which may take the edge off the temperatures here.

"But otherwise head in land and the further west that you are, you could see highs of 18C, so perhaps a little bit warm on Wednesday with light winds and quite a bit of sunshine."

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Sunny intervals and scattered showers.

Today:

Mist and fog patches clearing fairly quickly, then a day of sunny intervals, but also variable, often large amounts of cloud. Showers in the northwest, whilst scattered showers, some heavy, will develop across England and Wales.

Tonight:

Showers gradually fading, then some clear spells, allowing patchy frost and fog to develop over Northern Ireland and Scotland. Low cloud forming over parts of northeast England.

Wednesday:

Most parts dry with variable cloud and sunny spells, although a few showers possible in the north and west. Some low cloud and coastal mist for eastern Scotland.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

A lot of dry but mostly cloudy weather. Becoming cooler than of late with isolated showers and some hill rain. Becoming windy. More organised rain/showers across the south on Saturday.
