Brits are set for a frosty start with dense fog in the morning in some parts of the UK before a sunny day and temperatures reaching 17C.
Low pressure has been in control and more unsettled weather is expected for the coming days and through the weekend.
Then going into next week a high pressure system will be competing and although it is not yet clear, which will dominate, it is likely to be more settled.
Before that, it will be a cold start to Thursday with mist and fog in some areas but temperatures will hit the mid to late teens during the day with the sun coming out.
Met Office Clare Nasir said: “Towards the north clearer skies, away from the far north west of Scotland where temperatures will hold up with a stronger wind and also some showery bursts of rain.
“But inland that is where we will see the lowest temperatures as we head into Thursday morning, certainly a fairly widespread rural frost across much of Scotland, even down to the far north of England, far north of Wales, sheltered spots of Northern Ireland, but here you will see more cloud during the day, some showery bursts of rain.
“In the wake of that rain the air is moist and we could see some mist and fog patches form which could turn a bit dense through the early hours of the morning.”
It is likely to be a rainy day in the far south of England and there is also a weather front bringing rain to the far north west of the country.
Otherwise it will be sunny on Thursday and fairly warm for the time of year with temperatures reaching 17C.
“It’s a fine day across central and eastern parts of Scotland and that sunshine extends down towards northern England as well as the Midlands and Wales but more rain comes and goes across the far south,” continued Ms Nasir.
The outlook for Friday and the weekend is for blustery weather and rain but there will also be sunny spells and the temperatures are likely to remain mild.

Further outbreaks of showery rain at times over Scotland and Northern Ireland, showers also into parts of northern England later. Drier further south. Less cold than last night.
Friday:
A more changeable and unsettled day than today with most regions seeing some showers or longer spells of rain at times. Some bright spells too though. Windy in the north.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
Sunshine and showers on Saturday, some heavy. Drier for a time Sunday before rain spreads from the southwest later, clearing Monday. Breezy at times, temperatures around average.
