UK weather forecast: Brits to be lashed by torrential downpours as warnings issued

Weather warnings have been issued in the UK as forecasters prepare for a day of high winds and heavy rain.

Unsettled conditions will begin to sweep across much of the country in the early hours of Tuesday and are expected to last until the evening, leading to risks of flooding in areas where rainfall will be especially concentrated.

The Met Office has applied a yellow warning for rain in south Wales and the south coast of England, where rain "may lead to some flooding and disruption to travel".

Another warning has also been given for rain in southeast Scotland, which will be in effect until 9pm on Tuesday.

Commenting on the stormy outlook, Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steven Ramsdale said: “Rain will affect much of the UK during the early part of this week, with a weather front on Tuesday bringing heavy rain and strong winds at times.

“Rain on Tuesday is likely to bring some impacts to travel and some possible flooding in places. Parts of southern Wales, southern England and eastern Scotland are likely to see the heaviest and most persistent rain, with over 30mm of rain in some places and some exposed parts of eastern Scotland potentially seeing 50mm.

"It will be a wet day for many however with 10-20mm of rain falling across much of England, Wales and Scotland.”

Showery interludes will follow on Wednesday, with gusts in excess of 60mph affecting some coastal and northern areas going into Thursday.

Temperatures are also predicted to fall throughout the week, returning closer to a seasonal norm following several days of mild weather.
