UK weather: Exact day storms and deluge of rain could bring heatwave to thundering halt

Brits are set to be hit with thunderstorms and a deluge of rain as temperatures drop this weekend.

Forecasters are expecting the storms to hit on Sunday after slowly moving in from the Atlantic and will worst hit the western side of the country.

After temperatures have hit 30C again this week the Met Office is expecting the mercury to remain in the mid-to-high 20s over the coming days before the settled spell comes to an end.

Temperatures are not expected to surpass the highest on record so far this year, recorded at 32.2C in Chertsey, Surrey, on June 10, but there will still be plenty of sunshine.

Thundery and unstable conditions will hit southern Ireland by Thursday before they move further westwards and there could be up to 25mm of rainfall within an hour.

After the flash flooding and Met Office amber warnings for last Monday, BBC forecaster Ben Rich has said there is the possibility of "some quite heavy thundery downpours" on Sunday.

He stated: "Into the weekend this area of low pressure moves closer and actually particularly on Sunday there is the chance for some quite heavy thundery downpours to drive northwards across the UK.

"So the increasing chance of rain, some of that heavy, as we go through the weekend, temperatures coming down just a little."

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern agreed: "A much more showery outlook for the weekend and beyond with the chance of some heavy downpours and some thunderstorms especially towards the west and southwest."

Meanwhile, Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said that, while temperatures will remain hotter than average for this time of year, most regions of the country will drop below the threshold for a heatwave.

According to the agency, a heatwave is defined as three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold, with the threshold varying in each county.

Mr Dixon said: "The dry, fine and sunny weather is to continue for the next few days with temperatures peaking at 30 degrees in parts of England.

"Temperatures remain above average for the time of year in the mid-to-high 20s (and) dropping below those heat wave thresholds in some counties.

"On Thursday there is a chance of thunder moving into western areas of Northern Ireland, the west of Scotland, North West England and North Wales."
