UK weather: Country braces for SNOW tonight as Met Office issues urgent warning

The UK is bracing for snow as the Met Office has issued an urgent warning for parts of the country tonight.

A yellow weather warning was issued for wind across parts of Wales, northwest England and southwest Scotland and could see wind and winter conditions hammer parts of the country until 11pm.

The Met Office is warning of disruption to travel conditions, with the possibility of delayed trains and buses and longer car journeys.

The wind alert warns strong winds bring the potential for "some disruption", adding: "Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

"It’s also likely some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and large waves."

A yellow wind warning has also been issued for Wednesday, starting at 6am and could see gusts of 40-50mph in London and South East England, South West England and Wales.

Winds will also spread late Wednesday morning into early afternoon across Northern Ireland with gusts of 45-50 mph at times inland and 60 mph along northern coasts.

However, the Met Office predict all parts of the UK could see rain and even snow in some parts as we go through the week.

Met Office Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said a "low pressure system" would be moving across the UK tonight, and parts of Scotland could see snow overnight.

He added southern and western areas would see strong winds on Wednesday, and even snow on higher ground in the north.

Unsettled conditions are said to be due to “explosive” weather bomb from Storm Antoni.

The new warnings come as the Environment Agency issued eight flood alerts for areas across southern England.

"After a brief lull in winds through the early hours of Wednesday, west or north-west winds are expected to increase once more during Wednesday morning, then remain strong for much of the day," the Met Office said.

"Gusts of 40-50mph are expected widely within the warning area, but some coastal areas, especially in parts of south-west Wales and Cornwall, could see gusts above 60mph at times.

"Outbreaks of heavy rain or showers will accompany the strong winds."

The organisation's deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates warned of further disruption.

But he too wouldn't rule out a return of snow in the days ahead.

He said there is "potential for heavy rainfall and even some snow, though the latter probably confined to high ground in the north".

He added: "Although subject to a large degree of uncertainty, gusts of wind could be in excess of 60mph in some exposed upland or coastal regions, with around 35mm (1.4in) to 50mm (2in) of rain possible for some areas."
