The United Kingdom is set to deploy approximately 20,000 forces to participate in one of NATO's largest exercises since the Cold War. The announcement was made by Grant Shapps, the British Defence Minister, in a speech planned for later today. The exercise, named Steadfast Defender, is expected to take place in the first half of 2024 and will involve a total of 40,000 troops from 31 countries, including 13 NATO members and Sweden.
According to NATO, Steadfast Defender will serve as a crucial collective defense exercise, aimed at testing the alliance's military capabilities, equipment, and interoperability. The primary objective is to send a strong deterrent message amid ongoing concerns about the conflict in Ukraine and potential future threats from Russia. Shapps emphasized the UK's commitment to playing a leading role in the exercise, alongside Germany, which has announced a participation of 12,000 troops.
