UK snow forecast: Brits to be blasted by Arctic blizzard with ice and freezing -2C lows

Brits are set for flurries of snow in another icy start today before the sun breaks out for a bright and sunny day for many.

While it may not hit the lows of earlier in the week with -9C recorded in Benson, Oxfordshire, on Tuesday, it is likely to still be bitterly cold with the mercury dipping to -2C in the morning for today and Friday.

There has been a north-south divide in the weather with warmer conditions in Scotland from air coming in from the Atlantic and now the temperatures are starting to even out.

And the reason for the brighter weather is that the front that swept through the country on Wednesday has now moved into France allowing for the finer conditions to come through.

"For most it will be dry with some decent sunny spells particularly in the west," said BBC weather forecaster Matt Taylor.

"It doesn’t mean we won’t be without frost and ice particularly across central and western areas but temperatures will still be nowhere near as low as they have been through recent nights.

"A few mist and fog patches in the west too but for the vast majority it is going to be a dry and sunny day. Northern Scotland will see a few showers and across southeast Scotland into eastern England this is where we will see some showers come and go throughout the day.

"Not everyone will see them, many will stay dry and still a lot brighter across East Anglia and the south east compared with the grim conditions of Wednesday."

There is more widespread frost and it is set to be colder overnight going into Friday “with a risk of ice where showers have continued,” said Mr Taylor.

He added: "But if anything Friday should be another pleasant day for most."

Maps from WXCharts shows that there could be an inch or two of snow in Scotland and northern England going into Thursday and Friday.

Similar weather conditions are expected for the weekend before blustery conditions move in on Sunday evening with gale force winds a possibility.

Mr Taylor said: "Another batch of more active weather fronts going into Sunday will push into the west.

"We start with a frost again particularly across some southern areas but Sunday there will be some sunny spells across England and Wales especially but increasing cloud for Scotland and Northern Ireland, heavy rain and strengthening winds, gale force winds, if not gusts of winds in excess of 60mph by the end of the day."

UK 5 day weather forecast

Today:

Some mainly light showers for northern and eastern areas, otherwise a mainly fine day for many. Light winds away from the southeast, where brisk northerlies will make for a chilly feel. Otherwise, temperatures near, to slightly below normal.

Tonight:

Still a few showers around eastern coasts. Otherwise, many areas fine and cold with a widespread frost. Freezing fog likely for parts of the west, mainly Northern Ireland.

Friday:

Fog clears to leave another mainly fine day. Thicker cloud will bring spells of mainly light rain to the northwest later. Temperatures rather below normal after a cold start.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Rain at times, especially in the northwest. Some frost and fog in the south through the weekend. Very windy in the north on Sunday and into Monday. Temperatures around normal.
