UK set to be hotter than Spain as Brits finally brace for warm weather

Though it may feel like we've only just left icy downpours and wintery showers behind us, summer is fast approaching and the UK is finally set to see a break of warm and sunny weather. The Met Office predicts parts of the country will be hotter than Spain this week, with sunshine forecast until Friday at least.

Bristol can expect balmy temperatures through the week, not dropping below 17C, before hitting 20C on Monday, May 22. Though the Met Office forecasts cloudy skies for much for the week, residents can expect sunshine through the weekend and into next week.

So far, May has appeared to throw everything as the South West, from a drizzly bank holiday weekend to thunderstorms last week. With unseasonable cold and wet weather for the time of year, many Brits will be looking forward to (at least a week) of warm weather - with some cities boasting higher temperatures than Spain.

Through the week, the mercury will hover at around 18C, though the Met Office predicts thick clouds will persist. Then, on Saturday, May 20, Bristol will reach the same temperature as London, Barcelona, and Madrid - an enjoyable 19C - before rising to 20C at the beginning of next week.

Forecasters say things will feel warmest around 4pm, after the sun has had a chance to heat up the ground. Though the days are expected to rival the Mediterranean, the Devon-based forecaster predicts chillier nights, possibly dropping to 9C.

The Met Office South West forecast

Warm sunny spells this week but some rather cold nights.

Today

After a chilly start, soon warming up in the May sunshine. Cloud bubbling up at times, but generally staying dry with lengthy sunny spells. Feeling warmer in lighter winds. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Tonight

A fine evening with some late sunshine and staying dry with clear periods overnight. Perhaps not quite as cold as last night but turning chilly, especially in the countryside. Minimum temperature 4 °C.

Wednesday

A generally dry and bright day once again with sunny spells and a light breeze. Feeling pleasantly warm in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday

Generally dry and settled with some sunshine. Isolated afternoon and evening showers are possible, perhaps most likely on Friday. Some chilly nights with patchy mist, but increasingly warm by day.
