The cheapest UK supermarket has officially been named, with major supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons missing out on the title.
New research has found that popular budget retailer Aldi is offering shoppers the lowest prices based on a basket of essential household goods.
Trade magazine The Grocer found that the discounted German grocer beat the 'Big Four' supermarkets - Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons - in a recent price comparison of 33 items.
Aldi came out on top with a total of £51.35, while premium supermarket Waitrose was found to cost a whopping £78.26 for the exact same items, The Mirror reported.
The news comes as supermarkets across the country bid to attract shoppers by offering lower prices amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The same 33 goods would have cost shoppers £60.43 at Sainsbury's, £64.25 at Tesco, £61.92 at Morrisons and £78.26 at Waitrose, The Grocer comparison found.
The best priced Big Four supermarket was Asda, where a food shop would have cost consumers £58.33 on average last week.

The trade publication's 'Grocer 33' price test compares prices each week using mystery shoppers.
Lidl was named the cheapest grocer the week before, when an identical trolley of goods amounted to £53.06. Lidl did not feature in last week's price test.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of Buying at Aldi, said: “The cost of their weekly shop is more important than ever for many people right now, and it’s great that an independent price comparison has once again recognised that Aldi won’t be beaten on price.
“We are the lowest priced supermarket in Britain and our customers always pay less for their shop with Aldi, which is also why we were named Cheapest Supermarket of the Year by consumer champion Which?.”
However, while Aldi came top on prices, it claimed the lowest spot for customer service.

Tesco was named the best for overall customer happiness, with Sainsbury's in second place, followed by Morrisons.
The Grocer comparison looked at Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and Aldi.
It normally includes Iceland, Lidl, Amazon, M&S and Ocado too, but did not this time.
Last month, Lidl was voted the cheapest supermarket by consumer group Which? in its own rankings.
The monthly price test by Which? compared the cost of 23 essential goods including own-brands and items such as Hovis bread over the course of 28 days – to reveal the cheapest grocer that month.
It found that, on average, shoppers would have paid £24.21 at Lidl.
It beat rival discounter Aldi by just 62p. Meanwhile, the most expensive supermarket was £9.50 pricier than Lidl for an equivalent basket of groceries.
Groceries with some of the biggest price differences included PG Tips tea bags, which had a difference of £1.52 between Lidl and Waitrose, and own-label seedless grapes, which had a difference of £1.41.
