UK nightlife sees some growth as impact of pandemic continues to bite

  • The UK's late-night economy has recorded its first expansion in over a year, with operating venue numbers rising by 0.4 per cent between March and June.
  • Despite recent modest growth, total late-night venue numbers remain 3.1 per cent lower than in June last year and almost 29 per cent lower than before the pandemic.
  • Nightclubs have been hit hardest by changing social habits, shrinking by 36 per cent since March 2020, while bar numbers have grown by 3.1 per cent.
  • The Night Time Industries Association has urged Chancellor John Healey to deliver targeted support on business rates and operating costs in the upcoming autumn Budget.
  • Industry leaders note that recovery remains fragile as consumers increasingly shift towards earlier daytime and evening outings rather than late-night events.
