UK heatwave sparks mosquito spike warning as expert urges Brits to cover up

  • Dr Mojca Kristan from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine stated that climate change could lead to species capable of transmitting illnesses like dengue fever and Zika becoming established in the UK within years.
  • While invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito are not currently present, their eggs have been detected, and modelling suggests dengue could be endemic in London by the 2060s.
  • Mosquitoes thrive in warmth and standing water, with recent June rains providing ample breeding grounds as temperatures rise.
  • People are advised to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and socks in the evening to protect themselves from bites.
