UK heatwave: Edinburgh trains to London cancelled due to high temperatures

Trains from Edinburgh to London have been cancelled on Tuesday amid the UK heatwave.

As a result of temperatures of nearly 40 degrees Celsius in the UK capital, no trains from Edinburgh will journey further than York. Operators have also issued guidance on the running of trains as a result of the blistering heat.

As reported by the Daily Record, all services from Edinburgh Waverley to London Kings Cross from 11.30 onward have been cancelled. Services headed to London Euston are still operating but are suffering from significant disruption.

As a result, The Train Line website states that those able to get on a train to London are expected to be travelling for more than five hours due to the delays. In addition, no services will be in operation on the East Coast Mainline between York and London after 12pm.

Operator London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has confirmed that the extreme heat is the reason for the cancellations. Meanwhile, Network Rail has urged the public to only travel if necessary.

Passengers have also been encouraged to check their journey before leaving, as speed restrictions will also be in place on railway tracks throughout the country. These have been introduced to make sure that trains continue to run safely.

The news follows reports that some locations in Scotland could see record-breaking temperatures in Scotland today. An amber weather warning for 'extreme heat' will be in place in Edinburgh until 11.59pm.

The previous record for the hottest temperature observed in Scotland occurred in August 2023. The village of Greycrook in the Scottish Borders recorded temperatures of 32.9C.

Holyrood minister Keith Brown has urged the public "to think about whether they need to travel and, if they do, make sure they're properly equipped and plan their journey in advance".
