UK gambling giant blames tax hikes for axing 400 jobs

• Gambling giant Entain has announced plans to cut approximately 400 global customer care roles across 11 countries, including the UK, to mitigate rising tax burdens.
• The Ladbrokes and Coral owner warned that a proposed doubling of machine games duty to 40 per cent in the Budget would add £100 million in annual UK retail costs.
• Chief executive Stella David cautioned that further tax hikes could trigger widespread betting shop closures and thousands of sector job losses.
• The customer care redundancy consultation follows an earlier announcement two months ago confirming 500 global cuts across corporate and technology functions.
• Rival operators are also cutting costs in response to tax increases, with William Hill parent company Evoke closing 278 high-street shops over the past year.
