UK Foreign Office issues Portugal travel warning

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for people travelling to Portugal - with a warning issued over potential disruption in April.

The first warning relates to industrial action by Portuguese immigration officers, the Liverpool Echo reports. Between April 6 to April 10, there may be travel disruption.

Information on forest fires and the use of masks in Madeira and beach safety has also been modified. While travelling in Portugal, it's important to know that some destinations still have coronavirus restrictions in place.

In Madeira, the regional health authority recommends the use of a face covering in medical facilities, retirement and nursing homes if you have been diagnosed with a respiratory illness. Most restrictions have been lifted in the Azores, but you will still need to wear a face covering on entry to medical facilities, retirement and nursing homes.

This measure does not apply to children aged 10 and under. There is also a heightened risk of forest fires when the weather is hot and dry.

Some parts of the country are already classified as high risk. Lastly, the Foreign Office has reminded people about the dangers of beaches and swimming.

Deaths by drowning occur every year on Portuguese beaches and in swimming pools. For those heading to a resort, check the warning flags prior to entering the sea.

The red flag indicates danger: do not go into the water. The yellow flag is cautionary: you can walk in the water, but you cannot swim.
