Welsh broadband firm Ogi has become the first internet service provider in the UK to deploy Nokia’s 25Gbps full-fibre tech.
The company has deployed the telecoms giant’s 25 gigabit per second passive optical network (PON) fibre technology at Cardiff tech incubator, Tramshed Tech.
In the first commercial deployment of its kind in the UK, engineers at Ogi have upgraded Tramshed’s broadband, more than doubling the bandwidth capabilities for start-up firms at the site.

Nokia’s 25G PON allows operators to boost fibre broadband capabilities as demand for capacity increases, with no new fibre needing to be laid. It also makes it possible for the operator to support business services, gigabit residential broadband, and some 5G mobile transport capabilities all on the same fibre infrastructure.
Ogi’s chief technology and operations officer Justin Leese said: “We talk a lot about our network – and full fibre – being future ready, and today we’re able to demonstrate this claim by installing Nokia’s latest technology on our network.”
“As demand for speed and resilience increases – particularly in places like Cardiff – so too does the need for our network capabilities to pivot and flex. Full fibre provides the opportunity to upgrade connectivity without the need to re-dig roads and, in its simplest form, upgrades are managed by switching out the technology at either end of the network.

Ogi has an ambitious £200m phase one business plan for the roll out of its ultrafast broadband across 150,000 premises in Wales by 2025.
