The UK recorded another 12,487 Covid-19 infections on Thursday - a 25 per cent drop on the previous day’s figure.

However there have been another 438 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test, nearly double the 227 posted on Wednesday.

The impact of the pandemic on hospitals still appears to be easing, however, with 11,256 patients testing positive on Wednesday. The figure has now fallen every day since April 19, when 17,971 patients had the virus.

Some 77,154 Covid infections have been recorded over the past seven days, a 31.5 per cent decrease on the previous week.

Despite Thursday’s rise, Covid deaths are also trending lower with 1,288 over the past seven days - down 21 per cent on the previous week.

The latest update comes as a new World Health Organisation report said almost three times as many people have died as a result of Covid-19 as official figures show.

There were 14.9 million excess deaths associated with Covid-19 by the end of 2021, the UN body said on Thursday.

The official count of deaths directly attributable to Covid-19 and reported to WHO in that period, from January 2020 to the end of December 2021, is slightly more than 5.4 million.

The WHO report is the most comprehensive look at the true global toll of the pandemic so far.
