UK bank says it will give people £175 cash for free

Halifax is offering a free £175 for customers who switch bank accounts.

Several savings and current account providers have tweaked rates and improved their perks recently after a string of hikes to the Bank of England base rate.

Halifax's new £175 switcher offer is for customers who switch from another bank to a Reward Current Account or Ultimate Reward Current Account between November 29 and December 19. The £175 will be paid within three days of the switch completing.

Halifax customers are also eligible if they change an existing bank account with Halifax to a Reward or Ultimate Reward Current Account, haven’t had a switching bonus from Halifax before and switch an account from another bank – including all Direct Debits - using the Current Account Switch Service.

Alongside the switcher bonus, Halifax Reward Account customers could receive either £5 cash each month or a choice from a range of lifestyle benefits including cinema tickets, magazine downloads or movie streaming, if they meet the monthly qualifying criteria.

The Current Account Switch Service transfers your existing current account balance and all Direct debits, standing orders and salary commitments, within seven days.

HSBC and Nationwide Building Society are offering £200 to switch current accounts to them, subject to terms and conditions. Last week, Santander unveiled its new Edge current account, which has a linked easy access savings account.

The Santander Edge account offers cashback on debit card spending and direct debits, with up to £20 cashback per month. Customers with the new current account can also receive 4% variable interest on balances up to £4,000 with the linked savings account.
