The UK has failed to agree a new deal with France to stop small boats crossing the Channel after negotiations stalled following a disagreement over policing on Calais beaches.
Ministers were instead forced to agree a two-month extension to the existing multimillion-pound agreement with just hours to go before it expired at midnight on Tuesday.
