Eddie Howe has torn up Mike Ashley's old cup policy and urged his players to "dream big" in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season.
Newcastle United once went as far as releasing a blueprint explaining that cups would be used to rest players and blood younger players with Premier League survival the priority. The badly briefed former Newcastle owner was told that the Magpies were in danger of becoming another Wigan or Birmingham if they prioritised success in the cups and could be relegated.
But United ended up being relegated twice anyway in 2009 and 2016 compounding the frustration at a club that last won a domestic cup in 1955.
But Howe has long since consigned Ashley's cup policy to the trash can of history. As Newcastle bid for a place in round four of the League Cup, a competition the club has never won, Howe said: "I said very early on here that my dream is to try and win something for Newcastle and that hasn't changed. The league form is so important to us as well but in every competition we enter we want to give the best representation of ourselves."
Howe was delighted to hear that the Palace game was a complete sell-out and knows that the Toon faithful will have a big part to play on the night.
Howe said: "When you go into a cup draw the first thing you want is a home tie. We're always so proud to play in front of our own supporters so when you have a turnaround of three games in six days having two at home is a big lift for us."
But Howe was hoping to see his players take the responsibility of progressing to the next round. Howe said: "It is a mentality. When you play any game you have to get the mindset right.
"We have to get it right. Everybody has to have the same mindset, we want to win, we want to progress, we're ambitious - and we can dream.
"We can dream big."
