UGG boots have had a colourful history since the brand’s inception in 1978. Founded in Australia by surfers Brian Smith and Doug Jensen, the shearling-lined boots became a core feature of surf culture, thanks to their laid-back appeal and bulky design. UGG boots are traditionally made from sheepskin and complete with a thick fleece lining, making them a solid function-over-fashion staple.

The boots still grip the Gen-Z imagination today. You’ll no doubt have stumbled across a TikTokker or two pairing a Y2K-inspired outfit with a pair of classic UGGs. The boots are constantly being ousted and embraced by trend cycles, and it seems they are currently in high demand.

This is also helped by the brand's vast celebrity backing. A-listers such as Blake Lively, Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz all have a pair of UGGs in their luxury shoe archives.

Yet since the Noughties, UGG has rebranded somewhat. New styles such as the Fluff Yeah, the Fab Yeah and the Fuzz Sugar Slide tickle the interests of It-girl wannabes and preppy influencers wanting to make a statement via shoewear. The slipper designs come in tangy fluorescent hues, flatform silhouettes and textured forms, leaning into their newly acquired kitsch status - a dramatic shift away from their formerly lazy-girl connotations.
