PUNE: The anti-narcotics cell of the Pune police crime branch on Friday arrested a 23-year-old Ugandan national on the charge of possessing mephedrone and methaqualone drugs collectively valued at Rs 7.30 lakh at Khadki Bazaar.
A special court on Saturday sent Nsubuga Ismail currently residing at Aundh in police custody remand till August 25.
Inspector Prakash Khandekar from the anti-narcotics cell said,“A police team was conducting patrolling on a stretch between Khadki bazaar and Sapras when it received information about a foreign national looking for prospective customers for selling drugs.”
Khandekar said,“We took the foreigner into custody and recovered over 32gm mephedrone and over 16gm methaqualone drugs and a mobile phone totally worth Rs 7.30 lakh from his possession. Ismail during questioning told police that a Nigerian national had supplied him the drugs but we are verifying the information.”
The Kondhwa police had arrested Ismail on the charge of attacking a policeman in 2021. He was later released from the Yerawada jail on bail. Ismail visited India on a student visa and had taken admission in a city based college, he said adding that an FIR was registered on the charge of drug peddling under the sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
