UEFA hand ban to Anderlecht fans and club fine after crowd trouble during West Ham clash

Belgian club Anderlecht have confirmed that they have been handed sanctions by UEFA following their Europa Conference League defeat to West Ham United earlier this month.

On October 13, West Ham were 2-1 winners over the Brussels-based side at the London Stadium, with goals from Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen sealing victory and a place in the knockout rounds of the competition with two matches to spare.

However, the game was marred by crowd trouble in the away section of the stadium where Anderlecht supporters threw flares and missiles into home sections of the crowd. The incidents led to 13 arrests on the night, 12 of which towards Anderlecht fans, with four police officers injured and two hospitalised.

In a statement by Anderlecht, they confirmed that UEFA handed them a two-match ban from having away crowds at matches. The first of those comes when they head to Silkeborg in Group B on Thursday, November 3. The second of those matches is probational, lasting up to two years.

On top of that, the club have been ordered to pay a fine of €50,000 (£43,714.50) as well cover all damages made to the London Stadium.

Their statement read: “UEFA's disciplinary bodies have found that supporters in the away end used pyrotechnic material, threw objects and caused damage to the London Stadium during the match. UEFA therefore imposed a €50,000 fine to be paid by RSC Anderlecht and banned the club from selling tickets to its away supporters for the next two matches in UEFA competitions. The sanction is effective for the first match and probational for the second match, for a period of two years.

“This means that the club will not be allowed to sell tickets to our supporters for the match in and against Silkeborg IF on 3 November.

“The club will also have to compensate West Ham United FC for the damage caused at the stadium.”

There was also a pitch invader during the second half of the match. However, Anderlecht were not sanctioned by UEFA over it, with UEFA not being able to confirm whether or not he was an Anderlecht supporter.
