Uconn Forward Alex Karaban Hospitalized After Head Injury

UConn forward Alex Karaban (11) looks to pass around Dayton forward Nate Santos (2) during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game at the Maui Invitational Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, in Lahai

UConn forward Alex Karaban was taken to a hospital with a head injury following the No. 2 Huskies' 85-67 loss to Dayton in the seventh-place game of the Maui Invitational on Wednesday night. Karaban sustained the injury when his head hit the floor after being fouled with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the game. Despite initially staying in the game, he was later placed in the concussion protocol and sent to the hospital for further evaluation.

Karaban, who had an impressive performance with 21 points, including four 3-pointers in the first half, received clearance to fly home with the team before their departure. The Huskies, who lost all three games they played in the tournament, faced a tough challenge against Dayton.

Dayton's strong offensive display was led by Enoch Cheeks with 20 points, Nate Santos with 18 points, Posh Alexander with 16 points, and Zed Key contributing 15 points and nine rebounds. Cheeks' efficient shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, played a significant role in Dayton's victory.

Despite UConn's Liam McNeeley scoring a career-best 20 points in the previous game, he struggled against Dayton, going scoreless on 0-for-9 shooting. Karaban's 3-pointer briefly put UConn ahead in the first half, but Dayton closed out strong to take a halftime lead.
