UConn associate head coach Chris Dailey speaks with UConn head coach Geno Auriemma during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against North Carolina, Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, in Unc

UConn's legendary women's basketball coach, Geno Auriemma, is set to be honored for his remarkable 40-year tenure at the university. The celebration, scheduled for Wednesday night, will pay tribute to Auriemma and his longtime assistant, Chris Dailey, ahead of the game against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Auriemma, who has been instrumental in shaping UConn into a powerhouse in women's basketball, currently shares the record for the most wins in college basketball history with 1,216 victories, tied with Tara VanDerveer. The anticipation is high for Auriemma to break this record against the Knights, making it a historic moment for the coach and the program.

The festivities will include over 60 alumni, featuring basketball icons such as Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Rebecca Lobo, with nearly two dozen of them having played in the WNBA. These former players were pivotal in securing UConn's 11 national championships and 23 Final Four appearances, highlighting the program's unparalleled success under Auriemma's leadership.

As part of the celebrations, a pregame ceremony will be held to recognize the contributions of Auriemma and Dailey. Additionally, a petting zoo with goats, symbolizing G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time), will be set up outside the arena, along with a special ice cream flavor named “Legend-Berry Legacy” from the renowned UConn Dairy Barn, paying homage to the two coaching legends.

Despite his humility, Auriemma's impact on UConn and women's basketball is undeniable. Star player Paige Bueckers acknowledged his selfless nature, emphasizing the significance of celebrating Auriemma's achievements. Bueckers highlighted Auriemma's role in building UConn's legacy and expressed the team's eagerness to honor him for his unparalleled contributions.

Auriemma's coaching journey began in 1985, and his impressive record of 1,216-162 speaks volumes about his enduring success. With just one losing season in his career, Auriemma's transformative impact on UConn's basketball program is evident, having elevated it from a struggling team to a perennial powerhouse in the sport.

As UConn prepares to commemorate Auriemma's 40-year legacy, the celebration serves as a testament to his unparalleled coaching prowess and the indelible mark he has left on women's basketball.
