Chip Kelly isn’t a fan of a recent change implemented by the NCAA in relation to clock management during college football games. The change Kelly appears to be referencing during a brief interview at halftime of UCLA’s 27-13 win over Coastal Carolina, was implemented to speed up college games.
With this new rule, the game clock will continue to run on first downs except for during the final two minutes of the second and fourth quarters. Not surprisingly, Kelly, who has been known for running a fast-paced offense, doesn’t appear to be a fan.
During the halftime interview, Kelly took a jab at both the NCAA and TV networks as he walked off the field.
“This new rule is — that’s crazy, we had four drives in the first half. This game goes fast. Hope you guys are selling a lot of commercials,” Kelly said.

UCLA went on to defeat Coastal Carolina 27-13, but led just 14-6 at the time of this interview. Considering UCLA didn’t score less than 28 points in a single game last season, and scored at least 32 points in every win in 2022, it’s easy to see this rule has negatively impacted Kelly’s squad a bit to start 2023.
