Uber To Cut Wait Times In Half At Sydney International Airport With New Dedicated Pickup Zone

The hassle of getting a lift from the airport has just become a tonne easier for some lucky Australians, thanks to Uber launching a new dedicated pickup zone at Sydney Airport.

For any lucky ducks living in Sydney with overseas holidays coming up, a new kerbside pickup option created by Uber is expected to reduce the wait time of your pickup by 50 per cent.

The new system is designed to improve the experience for international travellers arriving at Sydney Airport’s international terminal by utilising Uber’s PIN technology to identify users who have ordered a ride-share driver.

So rather than booking an Uber once landing at the airport and then waiting for a driver to arrive, travellers will now only need to stroll 20 metres from the Sydney International T1 doors to catch a ride from a brand-new dedicated pickup zone.

Here’s a basic rundown of how it works:

  • Riders departing from the T1 International Terminal can request an Uber and will receive a 6-digit personal identification number.
  • They then walk to the Uber pickup zone in front of the T1, and go to the first available Uber.
  • Riders then share their PIN with their driver, verify details of the vehicle and destination, and then ride away!

This quality-of-life improvement also keeps all the other benefits of using a ride-share app, like GPS tracking and paying an upfront price before confirming a ride, but it also halves the time spent waiting at the airport!

It also benefits Uber drivers looking to complete more trips, by offering them a convenient new holding area to wait for riders close to the T1 International Terminal. The change will not impact the Sydney Domestic Airport ride-sharing experience.

The managing director of Uber ANZ Emma Foley said that she is proud to create an “innovative” airport pickup solution.

“This new zone will provide a smoother and more efficient experience for riders and drivers alike, and by using PIN, we can help Sydney Airport ease congestion at busy periods — perfect timing ahead of the peak school holiday travel period,” Foley said in a statement.

This is the first time the PIN confirmation system will be utilised in NSW, with other airports around the world using it for years.

Melbourne Airport deployed the system back in 2021 and saw a drop in traveller wait time by 50 per cent. So thankfully Sydney can continue its tradition of copying all of Melbourne’s good ideas and maintaining their ongoing rivalry.
