Uber, Ola, and Rapido Drivers to Strike Nationwide on February 7: Here’s Why

The strike has been organised by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) along with other national labour bodies. In a post on X, the union stated, “App-based transport workers across India will observe an All India Breakdown on 7 Feb 26. No minimum fares. No regulation. Endless exploitation.”

Reasons Behind the Strike

In a letter addressed to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, the union highlighted “long-pending and unresolved issues” faced by app-based transport workers nationwide.

The union pointed out that there is no government-mandated fare system for services like Ola, Uber, Rapido, Porter, and other aggregator platforms operating autos, cabs, and bike taxis. As a result, companies determine fares independently, which the union claims leads to income insecurity, exploitation, and unsustainable working conditions for millions of drivers.

The union further urged the government to take action, stating that millions of app-based drivers are being pushed into poverty while aggregator companies continue to earn profits.

Demands of the Drivers

Referring to the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, the union has put forward a set of demands, including:

Immediate notification of minimum base fares by Central and state governments for all app-based transport services, including autos, cabs, bike taxis, and other aggregator-based services. The fares should be finalised after consultation with recognised driver and worker unions.

Strict prohibition on the use of private, non-commercial vehicles for passenger and goods transport, or the compulsory conversion of such vehicles into the commercial category, in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act, Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, and related rules.

Travel Advisory

Commuters are advised to plan alternative travel options on February 7, particularly during peak morning and evening hours, as the strike may disrupt services across the country. The extent of inconvenience, however, may vary depending on regional participation in the strike.
