Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Frichti: French riders' working conditions under scrutiny

FRANCE IN FOCUS © FRANCE 24

Those who work for platforms like Uber Eats and Deliveroo were hailed as heroes during the Covid-19 pandemic, risking their own health to make deliveries to those of us under lockdown. Today, delivery people still work for little pay and under harsh conditions. It's estimated that at least half the riders in France are undocumented. For that reason, many of them are having their profiles deactivated and losing their jobs. Critics accuse the delivery platforms of taking advantage of these riders.

We met several delivery workers who are demanding recognition for their work and for it to be taken into account in the administrative procedure to obtain proper working documents.

We also talk to Jérôme Pimot, a former delivery worker who is now part of a union representing delivery workers and fighting for their rights.

Finally, we report on "dark kitchens" and "dark stores", which are closed to the general public and operate behind closed doors. Their numbers have exploded since the pandemic, creating a nuisance for those who live nearby.
