During a joint campaign rally in Michigan, United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris's selection of Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, referring to them as a 'Democratic dynamic duo.'
Fain highlighted Walz's working-class background, emphasizing his values as a teacher, coach, governor, and proud union member. He commended Walz for always prioritizing the working class.
Furthermore, Fain lauded Harris for her past support of autoworkers, citing her presence on the picket line during the GM strike in 2019. The UAW International Executive Board officially endorsed Harris's candidacy at the end of last month.
In contrast, Fain criticized former President Donald Trump, accusing him of disparaging the union and the working class. He specifically called out Trump for his lack of knowledge about the auto industry and referred to him as 'a scab.'
Fain also directed sharp criticism towards Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, labeling him as 'a vulture.' The remarks made by Fain underscore the contentious relationship between the UAW and the former president.
The rally, attended by thousands of Michigan voters, including UAW members, served as a platform for Fain to voice his union's strong support for the Democratic ticket. The event highlighted the importance of working-class values and the role of unions in advocating for their members.
