U.S. Open playoff format: What will happen if they need to play extra holes

The 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Ma. has been a thriller and it might need a playoff to decide a winner.

So what will happen if there is a tie after 72 holes? They won’t play a full 18 holes like they used to. Instead, they’ll play two holes – the 1st hole and 18th hole – with total strokes deciding the winner. If there’s still a tie after that then they will play sudden death until there is a winner.

The U.S. Open used to do the full 18-hole playoff on Monday, with the last one of those happening when Tiger Woods beat Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines in 2008.

The new format took over in 2018, though we haven’t seen in a playoff since then.
