Tyrone footballer airlifted to hospital following accident travelling from match

A footballer from Co Tyrone was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast by air ambulance on Saturday evening after a traffic accident.

The crash occurred on the well-known Louth Eyes Road near Tempo in Co Fermanagh as Drumquin United player Christopher Armstrong was travelling from a Fermanagh and Western Football League game.

West Tyrone club Drumquin United’s reserve side were in action against a Lisbellaw United side on the day.

A representative from the Tyrone club has confirmed that Armstrong’s condition is now stable though he remains in hospital.

The Lough Eyes road was closed for the evening following the accident and Lisbellaw United posted on Facebook: “We would like to send our best wishes to Drumquin player who was involved in a crash on the Lough Eyes road and then airlifted to the Royal.

“We pray he is ok and thoughts are with him and his family and all at Drumquin.”

Following the accident on Saturday, a PSNI statement said “The Lough Eyes Road near Tempo has been closed in both directions following a road traffic collision. Please seek an alternative route for your journey.”
