Tyrick Mitchell targeting record assists tally this season for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell insists he is hoping to hit new heights in terms of attacking contributions this season.

The 24-year-old was capped twice by England in 2022 following excellent performances for Palace in the 2021/22 season and has started the new campaign well after a difficult spell last term.

Mitchell produced his first assist of the season in Palace’s 3-2 win over Wolves on Sunday, and he hopes the cross that set up Odsonne Edouard’s first goal is a sign of things to come. His previous five Premier League assists were spread across three seasons.

“It’s something I know I can be better at: creating opportunities for the forward players”, he said. “It’s definitely something I’ve taken more seriously as the years have gone by.

“It’s something we work on, on the training ground: me staying wide while other players are inside, and [me] giving the width. I know Odsonne is a great striker. I know if I go wide, he’s going to go to the front post, so it’s about getting him the ball. He’ll finish it — and that’s what he did [against Wolves].”

Palace have taken seven points from a possible 12 after their first four games of the new season, and occupy seventh position in the league as a result of their strong start.

Mitchell added: “Obviously you want all of them, but seven [points] isn’t far off it — and we’ve played some good opponents, so it’s a start we’re proud of.”
