Tyrick Mitchell responds to Teemu Pukki as Crystal Palace settle for point vs Norwich

Crystal Palace full-back Tyrick Mitchell says he was disappointed not to come away from Carrow Road with three points on Wednesday night after dominating against Norwich City for long spells.

The Eagles went behind after just 39 seconds to a Teemu Pukki goal, but grew into the match from then and had the better of the chances over the 90 minutes.

Wilfried Zaha restored parity for the visitors with a wicked, curling finish into Angus Gunn’s top corner in the second half before missing the chance to put Palace ahead just moments later after missing a penalty that Mitchell had won after a foul by Max Aarons in the box.

After the game, the young full-back said the feeling in the Eagles squad was that they had dropped two points rather than gained one, with the result keeping them 13th in the Premier League table after 23 games.

“I feel like bar the first chance that they scored we dominated the whole game but unfortunately, we weren't able to get the win,” he told PalaceTV at full-time.

Following Pukki’s opener the Finland international had two more chances to add to Norwich’s early lead but both times he was thwarted by a last-ditch intervention from Mitchell.

The first, on 20 minutes, saw him flick a header away for a corner at the back post while Pukki was lurking behind him waiting to prod the ball past Guaita if he failed to clear.

Moments later the Canaries engineered a two against one chance on Palace’s goal but, once again, Mitchell came to the rescue with a sliding block where Pukki looked odds-on to make it 2-0.

The Norwich striker told reporters after the game that his side would likely have won the game were it not for Mitchell's defending.

“It was two good opportunities and I was just glad that I could get back in time to stop them from scoring,” added Mitchell, who has started every Premier League for Palace so far this season.

“It’s something that as a defender you're trained to do - always try to be cool inside your own penalty area. I'm happy that I was able to do that.”

Despite the draw, Mitchell said there were plenty of positives to take from the way Palace played at Carrow Road, with the visitors having 71 per cent possession in the game and having 13 shots on goal to Norwich’s five.

“You can see every match that we're dominating games a lot better,” added the full-back.

“As a player and as a team that is what you want to do, you don't want to be on the back foot so it's good how [Patrick Vieira] is managing us and how we’re playing.”
