Tyler Perry Continues to Expand Creative Collaboration with Netflix
In a move that solidifies his relationship with the streaming giant, Tyler Perry has announced an expanded deal with Netflix. Known for his successful career in film and television, Perry had previously signed a feature film pact with the company in October. Now, he is adding television series to his repertoire with a multi-year, first-look series agreement.
As part of this expanded partnership with Netflix, Perry is currently developing a 16-episode hour-long drama titled 'Beauty in Black.' He will take on multiple roles by writing, directing, and executive producing the series. The storyline revolves around two women, Kimmie and Mallory, who lead vastly different lives but unexpectedly become intertwined. Kimmie, struggling to make ends meet after being kicked out by her mother, finds herself entangled with Mallory, a successful businesswoman.
Joining forces with Angi Bones and Tony Strickland of Tyler Perry Studios, Perry aims to bring this captivating drama to life. The announcement of 'Beauty in Black' follows the replacement of Perry's previous content partnership with Paramount Global (formerly Viacom) by the Netflix deal. This association not only includes television series but also encompasses his ongoing collaboration with BET.
Perry's contributions to BET have been significant, as he has created more than ten series for the network. His popular shows, including 'Sistas' and 'The Oval,' have resonated with audiences, leading to the development of spin-offs such as 'Zatima' and 'Ruthless.' Notably, Perry became a part-owner of BET+ after partnering with BET in 2019 to create content for the cable network and its streaming service.
While Perry's creative endeavors extend beyond Netflix, his collaboration with the streaming giant is notable. The multi-year, first-look deal for feature films, announced in October, will see him write, direct, and produce eight movies within four years. Already in the pipeline are films like 'Six Triple Eight,' a World War II drama starring Kerry Washington, and 'Mea Culpa,' a thrilling suspense featuring Kelly Rowland.
Perry's relationship with Netflix dates back to earlier projects, including 'A Jazzman's Blues,' 'A Madea Homecoming,' and 'A Fall from Grace.' These successful ventures paved the way for his continued partnership, as the streaming platform recognized the unique perspective and storytelling prowess that Perry brings to the table.
With his expanding deal, Tyler Perry continues to make waves in the entertainment industry. By combining his talents in film and television, he is set to captivate audiences with impactful stories and diverse characters. Netflix subscribers can eagerly anticipate the upcoming drama series 'Beauty in Black' and the future projects that will emerge from this prolific collaboration.
