Tyler Adams' and Kalvin Phillips' World Cup contrast mirrors familiar Leeds United story

Tyler Adams shines while Kalvin Phillips sits on the bench… where have we heard that before? England looked lethargic against the United States on Friday night as both sides played out a goalless draw. Most of the post-match reaction focused on the Three Lions' failings, with Harry Kane barely getting a sniff on goal.

In truth, the USA deserve credit for thwarting Gareth Southgate’s side and arguably could have won the game. Leeds United star Adams - appointed captain of his national side before the tournament - earned praise for his combative midfield display.

Tyler Adams is the one,” Ian Wright told ITV. “He gives them all the energy, with the interceptions, he drives them forward. He’s perfect for Leeds with the way they play, with the energy. That’s why they started as well as they did, because of the energy he gives them as well.”

It is ironic that “energy” is a trait England lacked, while Phillips watched from the sidelines. The Leeds academy product has hardly kicked a ball since his big-money move to Manchester City and possessed that exact trait under Marcelo Bielsa.

Despite carrying an injury, Southgate took the 26-year-old - one of England’s best performers in last year’s Euros - to Qatar. However, a miserable World Cup experience so far has mirrored his City journey.

Supporters warned Phillips about this very scenario when Pep Guardiola & Co came calling. A boyhood Leeds fan, the midfielder could have become an Elland Road legend but is watching his career fade into obscurity.

On the other hand, his replacement has settled into Yorkshire life seamlessly and frustrated England at the Al Bayt Stadium. Adams’ stellar performance is no surprise to Leeds fans who have watched his tireless midfield displays this season.

At £20million - less than half of the fee recouped for Phillips - the American looks like a steal, with bags of potential to improve further. While England may have stuttered, Leeds can claim a small win. Watching Adams dazzle while Phillips warmed the bench embodies their summer transfer business.
