A devastating incident occurred at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport, resulting in the loss of two workers and serious injury to another. The accident took place during maintenance work on wheel components at a wheel and brake shop, where a tire explosion occurred.
One of the victims, Mirko Marweg, aged 58, was a dedicated Delta employee with over 20 years of service. Marweg, who resided in Stone Mountain, Georgia, had been looking forward to retiring in a few months. His son, Andre Coleman, shared heartfelt memories of his father, describing him as a loving and supportive individual who was always there for his family.
Tragically, Marweg's body was unrecognizable following the explosion, making identification challenging for his family. However, they were able to confirm his identity through tattoos and a lanyard he was wearing, bearing the insignia of Mississippi State.
The second victim was identified as Luis Aldarondo, 37, from Newnan, Georgia. The injured worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, continues to receive medical treatment as of the latest update provided by Delta Air Lines.
Delta Air Lines clarified that the wheel parts involved in the explosion were not attached to an aircraft at the time of the incident. The company expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event and assured cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The facility where the explosion occurred is operated by Delta TechOps, a division responsible for maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for Delta Air Lines and numerous aviation clients worldwide. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with authorities yet to release any findings regarding the incident.
