Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters Saturday that running back Sony Michel informed him of his decision to retire from the NFL, according to Andrew Siciliano.
Michel was set to enter his sixth season in the league, having spent the 2022 campaign in Los Angeles with the Chargers where he was featured sparingly across 10 games.
Michel had latched back on for a second stint with the Rams this offseason, having re-signed with the team in June. But with training camp just a few days underway, the 28-year-old has reportedly decided to call it a career, making it a short reunion for the two sides.
The former Georgia Bulldog was a first-round pick by the Patriots in 2018. He won a Super Bowl during his rookie campaign in New England, during which he racked up 931 yards, the highest in any season of his career. He spent three seasons in New England before joining the Rams in 2021, where he won his second Super Bowl ring.
Across his career, Michel featured in 65 games, registering 20 total touchdowns and 3,243 rushing yards.
