Two-time F1 Grand Prix winner Patrick Tambay dies aged 73 after Parkinson's battle

Two-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner Patrick Tambay has died at the age of 73. Tambay - who raced for Ferrari, McLaren and Renault - passed away this weekend following a battle with Parkinson's disease.

The Frenchman enjoyed two spells in Formula 1, and it was his second visit where he enjoyed the most of his success. After taking a break to win the Can-Am Series for a second time in his career, he returned to F1 in 1981.

Following this, his maiden victory came just a year later as he got himself on the top of the podium at the 1982 German Grand Prix in the famous red of Ferrari.

A year later the French legend then added a second victory to his CV, prevailing at the 1983 San Marino Grand Prix around the famous Imola track. Labelling Tambay as 'one of the true stars of the 80's', his former team Ferrari paid tribute following his death.

Posting on Twitter, the Prancing Horse said: "We are all truly saddened by the news of the passing of Patrick Tambay. He was one of the true stars of the 80s winning two races with the Scuderia and contributing to winning the Manufacturers’ titles in 1982 and 1983."

F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali also paid tribute, labelling the Frenchman a 'great talent and ambassador' of the sport. He said: "I am saddened by the news that Patrick Tambay has passed away. He was a great talent and ambassador for Formula 1 throughout his life. We will all miss him deeply and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time."

His former employers McLaren also offered they condolences on Twitter, writing: "All of us at McLaren are saddened by the news that Patrick Tambay has passed away. He was a talented driver, racing for McLaren from 1978 to 1979. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
