Tragic news emerged from Ukraine as the Ukrainian Olympic Committee confirmed the death of two-time European weightlifting champion Oleksandr Pielieshenko on the front line in the ongoing war. Pielieshenko, aged 30, lost his life in combat against the enemy forces, as reported by the committee on Telegram.
Having joined Ukraine's armed forces in the initial days of Russia's invasion, Pielieshenko's commitment to defending his country was unwavering. Despite facing a doping suspension from 2013 to 2015, he made a remarkable comeback to clinch the 2016 European under-85 kilogram division title by a narrow margin of one kilogram. His success continued as he defended his title in 2017 in Split.
At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Pielieshenko narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal, finishing fourth in his weight category. However, his career faced setbacks with a second doping violation in 2018, tarnishing his achievements.
The Ukrainian weightlifting federation expressed profound sorrow over Pielieshenko's passing, acknowledging his contributions as a decorated athlete. National coach Viktor Slobodianiuk also mourned the loss on social media, emphasizing the heavy toll the war has taken on the weightlifting community in Ukraine.
Regrettably, Pielieshenko's death adds to the growing list of casualties among Ukrainian athletes and officials, with more than 400 individuals having lost their lives in the conflict. The weightlifting world mourns the loss of a true champion and hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of his country.
