Heartbreaking news emerged from Lake Marie in Antioch, Illinois, on Tuesday as two teenage girls, aged 16 and 13, lost their lives in a devastating watercraft collision. The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. when a Yamaha jet ski, operated by the 16-year-old girl with the 13-year-old as a passenger, crashed into a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser near the channel to Grass Lake.
According to witnesses, the teens were traveling at a high speed directly towards the approaching boat, and despite efforts to avoid a collision, the tragic accident unfolded. Deputy Chief Chris Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office stated that it appeared the jet ski did not attempt any sharp maneuvers and collided head-on with the cabin cruiser.
Both girls, who were wearing life vests, were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water upon impact. The occupants of the Sea Ray acted swiftly, pulling the girls from the water, calling 911, and providing immediate aid. Despite their efforts, the victims were pronounced dead after being rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The 16-year-old hailed from Lakewood, California, while the 13-year-old resided in Long Grove, Illinois. Their identities have not been disclosed by authorities pending notification of next of kin. The Lake County Coroner’s Office is set to conduct autopsies to determine the exact cause of death.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety and responsible boating practices. The investigation into the crash is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the collision. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the two young girls who lost their lives in this unfortunate accident.
