Two SA films to be shown at prestigious Sundance Film Festival

Two South Australian-made movies have been selected to be shown at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

Run Rabbit Run, which stars locally born Sarah Snook, was written by award-winning author Hannah Kent and filmed in South Australia's Riverland region.

It will make its world premiere at the festival in January, alongside Talk To Me, the movie debut by YouTube Adelaide brothers Danny and Michael Philippou — who are often referred to as RackaRacka.

Four Australian movies will be shown at Sundance and also include Shayda by Noora Niasari and Robert Connolly's Blueback.

Screen Australia chief executive Graeme Mason said the announcements were priceless for the Australian film sector.

"This is an incredible slate of premieres and I'd like to congratulate the teams on their selection for this world leading festival," he said.

"To have two feature debuts is a real coup, with rising talent Noora Niasari's Shayda, and RackaRacka, who have built an exceptional fan base online now reaching global audiences with their feature Talk To Me."

The selection continues a fairytale transition to the big screen for the brothers, who shot to YouTube fame with their action clips, which were filmed initially in their father's home.

"We're so excited to be premiering Talk To Me at the Sundance Film Festival," the Philippou brothers said.

"It's surreal. Cannot process it. So happy."

The movie, which was produced by Sydney-based Causeway Films' Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton, will make its international premiere in the midnight section of the festival.

It debuted in Australia on the closing night of the Adelaide Film Festival to a standing ovation.

Daina Reid was thrilled to hear the news about Run Rabbit Run.

"It has been an incredible journey making this film and working with such a massively talented writer in Hannah Kent, and our amazing leading actors Sarah Snook, Lily LaTorre and Damon Herriman," she said.

The Sundance Film Festival has been a gateway to the world for many past South Australian movies, including Shine in 1996, Wolf Creek in 2005 and Time Machine in 2015.

It runs for 11 days from mid January 2023.
