Two people injured in Black Friday shooting at Bay Area mall, police say

Two people have been taken to hospital after being shot at Westfield Valley Fair in California on Black Friday, police said.

The victims were located inside the Santa Clara mall and taken to a local hospital, the San Jose Police Department said. Their conditions are unknown.

Police first received a report of a shooting at around 5.40 p.m PST. They added that it appears to be an isolated incident and not an active shooter.

No information about the suspect has been released.

Police are evacuating the mall and have said there is no ongoing threat to the public. They have urged people to avoid the area as the investigation continues.

In a post on X, San Joe mayor Matt Mahan said: “This is not the news I wanted to share with you this holiday weekend. My prayers are with these victims and I know our officers are doing everything they can to find the person responsible and hold them accountable. Currently, there is no ongoing threat to the community but please avoid the area.”

The Independent has reached out to the San Jose Police Department for comment.
