Update

THE CRASH Investigation Unit is examining the cause of a collision involving a police car and a Mazda 6 on Maitland Road at Islington this morning.

A NSW Police spokesman said a Traffic and Highway Patrol vehicle was responding to an urgent request for assistance in Mayfield when it was involved in the collision.

"The drivers of both vehicles - a male senior constable and a 20-year-old woman - were both taken to John Hunter Hospital for precautionary measures," he said.

"Specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigations Unit have commenced inquiries into the circumstances of the collision.

"Investigations continue."

A police car has been involved in a collision with a white Mazda on Maitland Road at Islington this morning.

Officers have blocked the major thoroughfare near the intersection of George Street and Maitland Road while they assess the situation.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene shortly before 9am on reports of a two-car crash.

A spokeswoman said four ambulance road crews were sent to the scene.

The condition of the two patients, or details on what caused the crash are unknown at this stage.
